The Ugandan Olympic Committee (UOC) delivered a speech on preparations for the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and the Birmingham 2022 Joint Wealth, Islamic Sports and African Youth Games.
This was delivered by Donald Rukare, the President of the Ugandan Olympic Committee (UOC) during the year-end speech at the UOC headquarters in Lugogo, Kampala on Tuesday 28e December 2021.
âPreparations for the Beijing Winter Games are underway. There is only one athlete (Brolin Mawejje) trying to qualify for the games. We will know our participation in the Winter Games by 17e January 2022, closing date of the qualification period and announcement of the final quota. We hope it will reach Beijing, China. Rukare noted.
Mawejje has two more events to know about his status and has received support through OS Winter Games funding.
Rukare noted that the total open allocation quota for the Uganda team is 40; with the first distribution having 36 locations and the second with 4 locations.
A number of disciplines have already embarked on the path to qualification and these include; netball, rugby 7, parasports (para-athletics, para-badminton, para-swimming and powerlifting), 3 Ã 3 basketball, mixed badminton teams, table tennis, weightlifting and women’s cricket.
The matches will be played at multiple venues in Birmingham and the West Midlands, the main one being the Alexander Stadium.
Accreditation preparations have already started and the Heads of Mission Seminar is scheduled for 24e – 27e January 2022.
Islamic sports games:
Uganda will also participate in the 5e edition of the Islamic Sports Games scheduled for the 9e at 18 years olde August 2021 in the city of Konya, Turkey.
These games have 54 countries and were due to take place in 2021 but have been postponed due to COVID-19.
Seven sports disciplines such as athletics, badminton, basketball, table tennis, swimming, taekwondo and weightlifting will be considered.
Addis Ababa 2022 African Youth Games:
The fourth edition of the African Youth Games will take place in the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The games were originally planned for the city of Maseru, Lesotho.
The African Youth Games target the 14-18 age group with the aim of contributing to the development of African sport and the growth of Olympic values.
Meanwhile, UOC will embark on the construction of a new house, from 2022, as well as the consolidation of partners obtained from 2021.
