Stevenson records 10th round TKO

Herring now has a cut on its right eye at the start of the turn. Ref has a ring doctor watching the Herring cut 25 seconds after the start of the round. The doctor says Herring is fine to continue and the action resumes. Stevenson makes matters worse with clean, sharp punches that all land upstairs. Stevenson wraps a left hook around the guard and a right hook around the guard follows. Now a right right hand in the middle and that’s it. The referee intervenes between the combatants for a training TKO.

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 9

Stinging headshots from Stevenson right in the middle of the ring. These are powerful punches that Stevenson absolutely sits on. (10-9 Stevenson, 89-82 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 8

Another four-hit combination from Stevenson, although Herring did a good job of not absorbing much punishment while defending the fierce exit. Stevenson’s jab could very well be the best jab in boxing. (10-9 Stevenson, 79-73 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 7

Stevenson has a 102-49 connection advantage at the halfway point. Lightning-fast combinations in the middle of Stevenson’s ring. The Newark, New Jersey fighter stands in the pocket with Herring – where the champion wanted to be – and makes the most of the older warrior with a clean, quick punch. (10-9 Stevenson, 69-64 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 6

The herring comes out working behind the jab. But it doesn’t take long before Stevenson connects with an average two-part suit. The right hook briefly sends the herring off balance. The champion never saw this blow coming. Another right hook – this one landing on Herring’s body, which shows noticeable swelling under his right eye. (10-9 Stevenson, 59-55 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 5

The herring uses the jab to come forward and attempt strong shots, but Stevenson returns with headshots. The herring lands but Stevenson counter with haste. The herring lands a right and now connects to the body in its best attack streak this fight so far. Herring with a punchy enough exit to hook the round. (10-9 Herring, 49-46 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 4

Herring cutting the ring well and trying to push Stevenson to his left. Herring now pumping his right jab. Stevenson pushes Herring’s head back with his scathing blow. A better round for the champion but not enough to take the frame. (10-9 Stevenson, 40-36 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 3

Combination of four hits followed by a combo of three hits from Stevenson. It’s a clinic. The herring tries to dig and strike back, step forward and sway. But Stevenson is staying one step ahead. The two fighters are holding on.

Things really escalated this round. Immediate advice in Herring’s Corner: “You have to push this mother away.” Easier said than done because Stevenson takes another round. (10-9 Stevenson, 30-27 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; 2nd round

Stevenson hits the body with a bang and lands that crispy left hand again. His speed is a huge issue for Herring, who eats a combination of multiple hits seconds later. Stevenson is way too quick for Herring. He raises his left hand at will, pricking Herring who is 11 years older than the young star. One-two punctuated with a left hand at the temple. Tried to give Stevenson a 10-8 there, honestly. (10-9 Stevenson, 20-18 Stevenson)

Herring versus Stevenson; Round 1

Stevenson throws a jab in the midsection and is already showing his superior hand speed. Body shot with right hand followed by left upstairs. Right to the body and left to Stevenson’s face moments later. (10-9 Stevenson)
