MINNEAPOLIS- The University of Minnesota led CoSIDA District 6 with the most male and female academic team members of any district, with three named to the men’s side and four to the women’s side, as announced by the college sports information directors of America.

Alec Bastien and Bethany Hasz paved the way as revenants of honor while Owen Hoft, Kaleb Siekmeier, Abby Kohut Jackson, Val Larson and Abigail Schaaffe all additionally represented brown and gold. The University of Minnesota now has 25 representatives on CoSIDA All-District teams this sports year.

Recognizing the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance in competition and in the classroom, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve with at least a GPA of at least 3.30 (on a scale of 4, 0) at his current institution to be nominated for CoSIDA Academic All-District and CoSIDA Academic All-America. Candidates are elected by CoSIDA members throughout the year.

A native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Basten earned his fifth All-District honor. The four-time All-American is the back-to-back Big Ten champion in the 3,000m steeplechase and the 2021 NCAA runner-up in the same event before finishing 10th in the event at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials. The three-time All-Big Ten pick holds four Gophers records – the 3,000 meters indoors, the 5,000 meters outdoors, the 3,000 meters steeplechase and the 8K cross-country. The 2021 NCAA Indoor Elite 90 award winner is also a nine-time All-Big Ten Academic Selection and an eight-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

A native of Alexandria, Minnesota, Hasz is now a four-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Honoree. Six-time All-American between track and cross-country. The two-time NCAA Midwest Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year is an eight-time Big Ten pick and is a two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year in Cross Country and has also earned the honor in the 2021 indoor season. Hasz is the owner of nine different top 10s in school history in athletics, including four school records. She has won four different Big Ten titles during her cross country and track career and was the 2021 NCAA Indoor Elite 90 award winner. She has been honored academically 16 times by non-CoSIDA organizations during her career. career and was an eight-time Big Ten Emeritus Scholar.

A native of St. Mary, Jamaica, Schaaffe was one of the most successful Gophers in history in his first two seasons in Minneapolis. She holds two school records, both set this year, in the 4x400m relay. She’s won five Big Ten championships since joining the Gophers, including two this season in the 4x400m indoor relay and the 400m hurdles just weeks ago in front of home fans in Minneapolis. She was a two-time All-American in the 4x400m relay and holds eight different top 10 finishes in school history. She has earned eight different All-Big Ten accolades since joining the program and qualified for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400m hurdles for the first time last weekend.

A native of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Hoeft earned All-America honors in the distance medley relay in 2020 and closed his 2021 campaign as a Big Ten champion and a first-team All-Big Ten pick in the mile. . The second generation Gopher is an eight-time All-Big Ten Academic selection and has been honored twice by the USTFCCCA. He was a six-time Distinguished Scholar Big Ten and currently holds two top 10 finishes in program history in the 1500m and 5000m.

A native of Huxley, Iowa, Kohut-Jackson is a nine-time All-Big Ten Academic selection as well as an eight-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. She earned second-team All-America honors in 2021 and was the NCAA Midwest Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. A four-time Big Ten pick, Kohut-Jackson finished her best cross-country season last fall with a 39th-place finish at the NCAA championships, making her an All-American in the sport for the first time. In 2021, she won two Big Ten titles in the indoor distance medley relay and the 3,000 meter steeplechase – she also holds school records in both events as well as a relay. In 2021, she also finished 19th at the 2021 US Olympic Trials in the 3000m steeplechase.

A native of DeForest, Wis., Larson is a three-time All-American and a seven-time All-Big Ten. She has won four Big Ten championships in her career, including one this season in the indoor 4x400m relay. She won three more titles in 2021 – the 4×400 meters indoor relay, the indoor medley distance relay and the 4×400 meters outdoor relay. Larson is also a co-owner of the University of Minnesota record for the indoor and outdoor 4×400-meter relay with his latest record coming last weekend in the NCAA West preliminary rounds which sends the relay team back to Eugene. She is a four-time All-Big Ten Academic Selection and a four-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

A native of Mahtomedi, Minn., Siekmeier is a two-time All-America selection for the Gophers in shot put, including first-team honors in 2021. He qualified for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Champions in discus last weekend, and will compete in Eugene in June. The second-generation “U” pitcher earned a pair of All-Big Ten second-team honors in 2021 in shot put and discus. He is a three-time All-Big Ten Academic Winner and a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
