“We are very passionate about supporting our Special Olympics athletes and it is a way to raise awareness, fund and show our support,” said the OPP commissioner.

Ontario’s annual law enforcement torch run takes place on October 17. It is the largest public awareness fundraiser for Special Olympics in the province and has raised over $ 35 million since its inception.

Locally, in support of the torch run, the Guardians Half Marathon / 5K event will take place at the OPP Headquarters on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

“We are very passionate about supporting our Special Olympics athletes and it’s a way to raise awareness, fund and show our support,” said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

“It is a bridge for the athletes to continue their training, their competition, and it brings a lot of joy and value to their individual lives and to their families,” he said.

While people can participate in the event by running the half marathon in person or virtually, they can also support Special Olympics by drafting an athlete for $ 250.

“Your financial contribution goes a long way to supporting the training that takes place for these highly competitive games. The programs help youth and adults with developmental disabilities be at their best, ”said Carrique.

The Commissioner says it fills his heart with joy to see the positive impacts of Special Olympics athletes participating in sporting events.

“You will never meet more positive people than Special Olympics athletes. They really bring joy to anyone who takes the time to get to know them and interact with them, ”he said.

This year’s fundraising goal is $ 70,000. The event has already raised $ 62,000.

“We’re looking to hit and completely exceed the $ 70,000 mark, and that’s just for the Guardians race,” said Carrique.

“We would never want this to stop anyone from continuing to contribute to Special Olympics as a whole. This is an ongoing fundraising effort throughout the year that must be sustained.
