The peloton are set to lose another big name this year, with Lisa Brennauer deciding to call it a day after this month’s European Championships in Munich.

The 34-year-old German rider won the world time trial championships in 2014, won Olympic gold last year in the team pursuit and was also part of the victorious Velocio-SRAM team which won three world team time trial titles between 2013 and 2015.

Having raced the inaugural Women’s Tour de France with Zwift in recent weeks, Ceratizit WNT rider feels the time has come to end a 14-year professional career.

“There hasn’t been a single special day when I suddenly thought, ‘I want to quit cycling.’ I think it’s more of a process that I’ve been through for the past few years and I’m thinking about my future and other plans I have in life. Now I’m at a point where I feel the time has come for me.

“Munich is going to be a big event for my last race, being very close to my home in Bavaria. So there are a lot of family and friends who can come and see me. I thought it was the perfect race to which I could wish to end my career.

Brennauer’s many successes also include overall victories in the Women’s Tour, Holland Ladies Tour, Thüringen Rundfahrt and Challenge by La Vuelta event in 2019 and 2020. She was part of the German team against the – victorious mixed watch at last year’s world championships.

She is also a multiple national road race and time trial champion.

“I think sport has shaped me as a person,” she said, considering her career and where she is now. “You become part of the team and you learn to work as a team and achieve goals together. It also teaches you how to overcome the downsides of life in general, not just as a cyclist, and how to get back to where you want to be. I think it shaped me as a person and I’m very grateful for that.

“There are so many great moments in my career that I can fondly look back on. Of course, my very first victory was a surprise when I became world junior champion in 2005, although I think my victory More emotional was the Olympics last year where we won the team pursuit, but there are so many good times throughout my career when I look back.

She thanked the Ceratizit WNT team for helping her rediscover her passion for the sport at a time when she thought she was at a crossroads. His next role will be one with the German army.
