It’s hard enough not to afford too many goodies during Christmas time and even harder when you’re an Olympian. Lithgow silver medalist Lachi Sharp knows all too well the importance of staying fit and healthy for hockey this holiday season. The 24-year-old is home enjoying the holiday season with his family and friends and he told the Lithgow Mercury how he is going to maintain his food intake and training. “Nutrition is a fun thing and I’m not the fattest, so I tend to find that the more I eat the better I feel,” he said. He said he was generally “pretty good” with his food intake, but of course he was going to have some fun on Christmas. “The Christmas season is a time when I can indulge myself, savor tasty food and have beers while enjoying the company of my family,” said Sharp. “I’m human after all and it’s my way of stepping away from the high performance mentality and enjoying the short time of year I’m home and can take a break from hockey. Sharp also shouted his mother Tania who is a talent in the kitchen and takes care of him. “I’m lucky my mom is a really good cook and looks after me while I’m home with great food that ticks all the boxes from a performance standpoint”, did he declare. While taking the time to enjoy delicious food and spend time with family and friends, Sharp won’t stray too far from the gym. The Lithgow Fitness Center has offered to be his training center while he is at home and to help him with his weight training and conditioning sessions. Sharp said he would be doing strength training sessions with a primary focus on injury prevention. “My weight training sessions when training full time focus primarily on injury prevention exercises, not just weight training all over my body,” he said. He said he had suffered numerous hamstring and hip flexor tears since increasing his training load at Perth, but over time he had learned more about his body and what it needs to compete at a high level. “The strength of the hamstrings, hips, glutes, core and back are the top five muscle groups targeted by hockey players because these are the muscles that are used the most in the position in which we play. “These exercises will form the basis of my strength work at Lithgow Fitness Center while increasing the load on the thigh, calf and upper body exercises,” he said. Sharp said his conditioning sessions will involve running five to 10 kilometers every other day and will be her main goal after Christmas. “Conditioning will become more of a goal for me once I have built a new base of strength training and after enjoying it. ‘some free time that I haven’t really had since the end of Tokyo,’ he said. He will also transition to Lithgow field hockey training as well as strength training. Sharp wanted to thank the owners of the Lithgow Fitness Center Jody and Lyne Presbury for their support and allowing him to work out in their gym. he does while he’s home and has a place to train, ”Lyne said. “It’s important for him to keep his physical shape, he’s a local boy, he did well and we take care of ours,” said Jody.
