Thrissur: ‘I want to learn powerlifting. I want to see the world like my sister did, ”said little Aneesha in her stubborn voice years ago. Her parents, former powerlifting champions, were worried about bringing their daughter into the world of power play, but had to put their worries aside before her determination.


Ms. Aneesha was selected as the top weightlifter in the Junior Women category of the Asian Junior Powerlifting Championship held in Turkey. She won championship gold lifting 375 kg in the junior 47 kg category. She is a second year student at St. Joseph’s College in Irinjalakuda. His college mates S Anjali and Siya Matilda won silver and bronze medals, respectively.

With Aneesha’s feat, the number of champions in her house in Alappuzha has increased. His father VN Raju is world and Asian champion. He won the GV Raja Award and the Rajiv Gandhi Award. Her mother Manju had also won the title of world champion. She has been selected as a strong woman of India for six years starting in 2005 and is a winner of the GV Raja. She is currently working at the Urban Affairs Department in Thiruvananthapuram.

Aneesha’s older sister, Anju Raju, was a national powerlifting star. Twin brother KR Arjun is also a star at the state level.

After competing in the powerlifting championship in Turkey, Aneesha landed in Delhi. She has started to prepare for the national championship to be held in Udaipur.
