Cliff Thorburn, 73, retires from competitive snooker after losing to Kuldesh Johal at the British Seniors Championship
Cliff Thorburn left snooker with a loss to Kuldesh Johal in the first round of the British Seniors Championship.
The 1980 world champion, who made the first 147 break at the Crucible in 1983, was beaten 3-0 by Johal, 32 years younger.

Former world number one Thorburn, who finished second in two other world championships, said it would be his last competitive event.

His highest break during the game was 15 while Johal scored a 47. Johal won the first frame 94-1 and also took the second by a comfortable margin.
Even though Thorburn pocketed more balls in the third quarter, he couldn’t avoid a 3-0 loss.
Eurosport’s Joe Johnson won the last two frames to beat Rod Lawler 3-2.

Lawler took a 71 break in the opening frame and quickly took a 2-1 lead. But Johnson equalized after beating fourth frame 47-45 and then won the deciding game.
