Canelo Alvarez will try his luck for a fifth division world title in 2022.

The WBC has approved Alvarez’s move to cruiserweight so he can face current champion Ilunga “Junior” Makabu. Details on the fight are not yet known, although it is expected to take place in May and could take place in Makabu’s native Congo, by ESPN.

“I know… what he’s done with the heavyweights he trains with, and that’s why we asked for the fight,” said his trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso, via Salvador Rodriguez from ESPN Deportes. “We know that [Makabu] is strong, but Canelo can beat him. … Many may say it’s crazy, but they also said it was crazy when Canelo was the junior middleweight champion and we were looking for middleweights, super-middleweight, light-heavyweights.

“I have a lot of confidence in Canelo. He’s very strong and has a lot of qualities, and I know he’s going to win this fight.”

Alvarez, 31, became the first Latino to hold an undisputed crown in the Four-Belt Era earlier this month when he knocked out Caleb Plant in the 11th round at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This victory gave him the IBF title from Plant to go along with the WBA, WBC and WBO belts he already held.

The Mexican is now just the sixth undisputed champion of the Four Belt Age and has undoubtedly proven himself to be one of, if not the best, fighter in the world. He is currently 57-1-2 with 39 knockouts.

Makabu defended the cruiserweight title last December with a TKO victory over Olanrewaju Durodola after winning it for the first time by unanimous decision over Michael Cieslak in January 2020. The 34-year-old has now achieved nine consecutive wins since 2016.

This fight with Makabu won’t nullify Alvarez’s other 168-pound titles, according to ESPN. The WBC is also expected to increase the cruiser weight limit from 200 to 190 pounds.

The fight between Alvarez and Makabu will likely take place in May. A win would make Alvarez a world five-weight champion. (AP / Steve Marcus)
